CEO view: Tony Fernandes of AirAsia

download MP3 audio

Tony FernandesWithin the space of five years, Asian budget carrier AirAsia has grown quickly, helping to shake up the airline business in the region. With its fleet of 30 Boeing 737-300 aircraft and 15 Airbus A320s, the no-frills airline currently flies to more than 45 destinations in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Macau, China, Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar.

AirAsia’s seen by many as a ‘blue ocean’ company as it was based on the Southwest Airlines model of quick turnarounds and low-cost fares. Although Group CEO Tony Fernandes says he hasn’t read the seminal book by INSEAD professors Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne, he says AirAsia has sought to exploit blue oceans.

“What does the market want? Nine times out of 10, when you go for what the market wants, it’s something that’s different. That’s why invariably everything we’ve done is kind of blue ocean, except for AirAsia X (AirAsia’s new long-haul operations) which is completely blue ocean. But we weren’t the first to invent low-cost travel, we weren’t the first to invent a low-cost hotel. We’ve taken it to another level, but we’ve been a bit Japanese in taking it, and adapting it, and making it better for our part of the world.”

Fernandes says AirAsia X is expected to start long-haul flights to the UK in September. Virgin has just taken a 20 per cent stake in the new carrier.

Branding has been key to AirAsia’s success – along with its low cost operations – and the airline’s CEO has been branching out into budget hotels and online financial services. Often described as Asia’s answer to Richard Branson of Virgin, Fernandes also started in the music industry before moving into the airline sector.

“Many Asian companies don’t value branding as much because they don’t see it in the bottom line straight away,” Fernandes told Knowledge. “It’s something that even I have to explain to my board time and time again, that the fruits of branding are over five years.”

And his advice to would-be entrepreneurs: “Go with your gut, give it your best bet and you may fail, but don’t give up.”

Knowledge spoke to Fernandes about his business ventures and strategy after a recent Bloomberg Forum in Kuala Lumpur.   Read transcript..

I am afraid that Air Asia are failing to deliver as I have flown with them on many occasions during the last three years and they are late on at least 50 per cent. I do not have a grudge with this airline but after many delays, additional costs bourne by their delay and the anxiety I have decided to forget their service until I hear that it is the airline that can be trusted to deliver. I have personally tried to contact Tony to inform him of continued unanswered telephone calls and a lack of care by the helpdesk but to date he has not returned an email or replied to his blog. Upon my mother's recent death I tried to gain a refund or switch the ticket to another date and after 4 months of trying to get an answer from them, nothing.

Hi,

I am a frequent traveller on AirAsia and would like to congratulate the airline for its excellent service and performance.

I am also happy that you have extended operations to various parts of India.

I have the following suggestions.

Please start flights from Visakhapatnam which is one of the ten fastest-growing cities in India with a population of three million and many more in the surrounding cities.

Secondly I observe that all the flights from India are to KL only. Why not start a flight directly to Kota Kinabalu as it is one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in Malaysia and it opens a gateway to the Philippines, Macau and China.

Please look into these possibilities as I am sure you would have a very big business.

Wishing you all the best in your bet with Richard Branson

Regards,
Surya Rao, India

I have read the blue ocean strategy and quite impress at how it works for companies who dare try to reinvent themselves. I believe Air Asia has done a great job in the promotion of budget air flights in the region and would admit to the fact that I am a direct beneficiary to this because of my constant flights every month. I too am trying to apply the principles of blue ocean as a tango event organizer in the region. I am currently in the midst ot preparation for the 3rd annual presentation of TANGOXPOSED BANGKOK 2008, a week-end of art exhibit, workshop and performance highlighting all things tango. I usually have over a hundred people flying from different parts of Southeast Asia to take part in this event and all of them have used and are using your airline for obvious reasons.

Dear Mr Tony Fernandes,

My husband has started working on a project in Da Nang, Vietnam. My 10 year-old son misses his father very much. Just wondering when you'll have a direct flight there (KUL-DAD)??? I hear that soon Da Nang will be a tourist sea resort, and is coming up very fast.We hope that you'll have a direct flight in the near future as yours seems to be the only affordable airlines for average M'sians like us. Congrats on your success. Through your example we can teach our kids to have dreams.
